Couples Therapy

Attachment Theory & PACT

For repairing relationships and building secure functioning: a partnership where you're genuinely in it together. In person in Boulder and online across Colorado.

Most couples who find their way here still love each other. What's gone missing is the connection. The conversation feels procedural, the closeness intermittent, and you both want the spark back. That's not a failing relationship; it's a relationship whose love is buried under pattern. Pattern is workable.

Couples work here relies on attachment theory and the Psychobiological Approach to Couples Therapy (PACT). Attachment theory guides our understanding of how early relationships with primary caregivers shape our capacity to form bonds, express emotion, and navigate conflict. Recognizing your unique attachment style (secure, anxious, avoidant, or disorganized) offers invaluable insight into your behavioral patterns, emotional responses, and relationship dynamics.

PACT builds on that foundation and incorporates insights from three critical areas: neuroscience, arousal regulation, and attachment theory. By exploring how these interplay in your relationship, we help you and your partner form secure and resilient bonds.

"A secure-functioning relationship is one where partners are 'in it together': a safe haven and a secure base for each other."

Inside the room

In session, we facilitate open and empathetic communication, allowing each partner to understand the other's attachment style, fears, and needs. The work is direct and experiential. We notice what happens between you in real time, and practice repair while it matters most.

Your relationship, as a living thing

We view your relationship as a living, breathing entity that deserves care, understanding, and nourishment. The attachment- and PACT-informed approach encourages couples to support each other's growth, repair ruptures, and strengthen their bond. It's a journey of coming together, navigating life's challenges hand in hand and building a love that's resilient, nurturing, and deeply fulfilling.

Common questions

Who is PACT couples therapy for?

Adult couples at any stage, dating, partnered, or married. Most of the couples who come here still love each other and have lost the thread, so the conversation has gone procedural and the closeness comes and goes. You do not need a crisis to start, and you do not need to agree on what the problem is.

How is PACT different from Gottman or Emotionally Focused Therapy?

All three take attachment seriously. PACT leans harder on what your nervous systems do in the moment, so the work is experiential rather than instructional. We watch what happens between you in real time, including tone, timing, and the body, and we practice repair in the room instead of assigning it as homework.

Do we both have to come, and what if my partner is not ready?

PACT is built for both partners in the room, because the work happens in how the two of you respond to each other in real time, and the relationship itself is the client, so neither of you is the identified problem. If your partner is not ready yet, you can start in individual therapy and work on your side of the pattern, then bring them in when it makes sense. The free 30-minute consultation is a good place to sort out which fits.

How long are couples sessions, and what do they cost?

Couples sessions run 75 to 90 minutes, longer than a standard individual hour because the work needs room. They are $270 at the top of an income-based sliding scale, honor-based with no verification required, and the first 30-minute consultation is free.

Do you take insurance for couples therapy?

I am an out-of-network provider. I can give you a superbill to submit for reimbursement. Worth knowing, many plans cover individual therapy but not couples work, so check your benefits before you count on it.

Can we do couples therapy online?

Yes. I see clients in person in Boulder on Spruce Street and by secure video anywhere in Colorado.
